Architects are qualified professionals who design new buildings and prepare plans for renovations or extensions to existing buildings. They also carry out project management, advise on planning applications and supervise building projects. Architects work as sole practitioners or in partnership with other professionals as part of a larger practice. Some specialise in a particular sector such as commercial or residential development, or historical restoration.
'Architect' is a protected title, and it is illegal to practise as an architect without being registered with the Architects Registration Board. Many architects are members of the Royal Institute of British Architects.
