Patents protect inventions by giving the patent holder the right to stop anyone from making, using, importing or selling the invention for a limited time (up to 20 years). It is important that anyone planning to apply for a patent gets one that properly protects their invention and gives them the best chance of making money out of their intellectual property. It is also important to seek professional help from a chartered patent attorney (or patent agent, as they are sometimes called) who will provide guidance through the application process.
This factsheet describes the services offered by patent attorneys and explains how to choose a suitable one.
