The Commercial Agents (Council Directive) Regulations 1993 (the Regulations) provide legal protection for self-employed commercial agents. A commercial agent is an intermediary who negotiates the sale or purchase of goods on behalf of another party (the principal).
The Regulations were introduced in order to bring the UK into line with EU law. They apply in England, wales and Scotland. In Northern Ireland the Commercial Agents (Council Directive) Regulations (Northern Ireland) 1993 apply.
This factsheet explains the purpose of the Regulations, who they apply to, and how both commercial agents and their principals are required to meet their respective obligations.
