The UK complementary and alternative therapy sector - also referred to as 'complementary and alternative medicines' - is subject to certain regulatory requirements. The requirements differ according to which therapy is practised.
Although many complementary therapists and their activities are not statutorily regulated, some therapists can register with the General Regulatory Council for Complementary Therapies (GRCCT) and the Complementary & Natural Healthcare Council (CNHC), which are the main voluntary regulators representing the sector.
Many professional bodies representing the sector also have strict codes of practice and occupational standards which their members must adhere to.
This factsheet provides an overview of the regulatory requirements that complementary and alternative therapists must comply with, including registration with a voluntary regulation body.
