The Consumer Rights Act ('the Act') amends and extends the Sale of Goods Act 1979, the Supply of Goods and Services Act 1982, the Unfair Contract Terms Act 1977 and other key pieces of consumer legislation. The Act also revokes The Unfair Terms in Consumer Contracts Regulations 1999 and the Sale and Supply of Goods to Consumers Regulations 2002.
The Act updates and simplifies the law relating to contracts between businesses and consumers. It overhauls implied terms, rights and remedies in consumer contracts and introduces specific rules for digital content. It became fully in force on 1st October 2015 and applies throughout the UK.
This factsheet provides a brief overview of the Act in the context of general consumer law. It does not cover parts of the Act that cover specific types of business, such as ticketing agencies and letting agents.
