Under the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations 2002 (COSHH) (as amended), employers have a duty to prevent or control the exposure of employees to any substances that are hazardous to their health. Employers are also required to carry out an assessment of the risks to employees involved in working with such substances. The COSHH Regulations apply to the self-employed in the same way that they apply to employers.
In Northern Ireland, hazardous substances are covered by the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations (Northern Ireland) 2003 (COSHH), which impose broadly similar requirements.
This factsheet explains the provisions of the COSHH Regulations and describes what employers must do to comply.
