Business and other organisations use copywriters to produce text, or 'copy', for a range of promotional materials, from leaflets, mailshots, sales letters and catalogues to detailed brochures and websites. Copywriters also draft the copy that is used in marketing campaigns, including newspaper and magazine adverts or press releases.

Copywriters generally work in marketing and advertising agencies or on a freelance basis. It is often more cost-effective for small business owners to employ a freelance copywriter on an ad hoc basis, rather than paying fees to an advertising agency.
