Before taking on staff or volunteers for certain roles, employers must ask for a criminal records check. This is to prevent unsuitable people from working with vulnerable groups or accessing sensitive information. In England and Wales, criminal records checks are carried out by the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) and are called DBS checks. (These have replaced CRB checks).
This factsheet describes the different types of DBS check and explains who can request a DBS check. It outlines the application process and introduces additional DBS services, such as the DBS update service and the Adult First service. It also explains the circumstances in which employers may accept a previously issued DBS check.
