Before taking on staff or volunteers for certain roles, employers must ask for a criminal records check. This is to prevent unsuitable people from working with vulnerable groups or accessing sensitive information. In Northern Ireland, criminal records checks are carried out by AccessNI and are referred to as AccessNI checks, disclosures or criminal history records checks.
This factsheet describes what types of AccessNI checks are available and explains who can apply for them. It also outlines the application process for the different types of AccessNI check.
