Before taking on staff or volunteers for certain roles, employers must ask for a criminal records check. This is to prevent unsuitable people from working with vulnerable groups or accessing sensitive information. In Scotland, criminal records checks are carried out by Disclosure Scotland (www.disclosurescotland.co.uk), which issues 'disclosures' and manages the Protecting Vulnerable Groups (PVG) Scheme.
This factsheet describes the types of criminal records checks provided by Disclosure Scotland. It also explains the application process for the different types of disclosure and for the PVG Scheme.
