All employers in the UK must comply with their employees' rights to request flexible working arrangements.
Employees with at least 26 weeks' continuous employment have a right to request flexible working, a right to have their request considered in a reasonable manner, and a right not to have it refused unless their employer has a valid business reason to do so. However they only have the right to request flexible working, and not the right to be granted flexible working arrangements. Accepting an employee's request for flexible working will lead to a permanent change to their employment contract.
This factsheet provides information about employees' flexible working rights, including details of which employees can request flexible working, how employers must deal with a request and when they can refuse a request.
This factsheet is intended as a starting point only. Professional advice should be sought before any decisions are made.
