Food labelling regulations set out the general principles, requirements and responsibilities relating to food information, and in particular to food labelling.

Food labelling requirements for England, Wales and Scotland are currently governed by the Food Labelling Regulations 1996 and in Northern Ireland by the Food Labelling Regulations (Northern Ireland) 1996, which set out broadly similar requirements.

From December 2014 the Food Labelling Regulations 1996 and the Food Labelling Regulations (Northern Ireland) 1996 will be replaced by the Food Information to Consumers Regulation (EU) 1169/2011 (FIC) in the UK.

Measures for enforcing the requirements of the FIC Regulation are provided for in England by the Food Information Regulations 2014 and in Northern Ireland by the Food Information Regulations (Northern Ireland) 2014. Similar regulations are expected to be introduced in Wales and Scotland.

This factsheet summarises the main labelling requirements for prepacked and non-prepacked food and the legal responsibilities of food business operators (FBOs).
