The General Product Safety Regulations 2005 ('the Regulations') apply to almost all types of new and second-hand product. The Regulations define a product as something that is intended for consumers or likely, under reasonably foreseeable conditions, to be used by consumers even if not intended for them.
The purpose of the Regulations is to protect consumers by ensuring products are safe when used under normal or reasonably foreseeable conditions. Responsibility for ensuring product safety is placed with the supplier of the product, whether producer, distributor or retailer.
This factsheet explains what types of product the Regulations cover, who they apply to and the obligations they impose, along with the penalties for non-compliance.
