Increasing numbers of people run part-time or full-time businesses from home. This is partly a result of the growing popularity of 'lifestyle' businesses, such as gardening or cleaning services, but also because of the falling cost and increasing ease of doing business online and over the telephone from a home base.

Before setting up a home-based business, you will need to think about the resources you are likely to need that you would expect to be provided in commercial workspace. Can you do without them or find an alternative if they are too expensive? This might mean hiring or buying expensive IT equipment, organising an assistant or reception facilities, or setting up a telephone answering service.

This factsheet describes the advantages and disadvantages of running a business from home, and identifies key issues such as planning permission, business rates, and mortgage and insurance issues. It includes useful hints and tips, and lists sources of further information.
