A crèche provides a temporary, secure place where children, aged between five months and eight years (12 in Scotland and in Northern Ireland), can be cared for while their parents study, attend appointments or carry out other time-limited tasks. Crèches are often attached to shopping centres, leisure centres, educational establishments, hotels and places of work. A crèche facility differs from a nursery as it provides care on an occasional, ad hoc basis, for a few hours at a time, whereas a nursery provides regular care for longer periods of time, usually between the hours of 8am and 6pm.
Legislation and National Standards covering crèches and requirements in relation to registration, training and the age of children you can care for, differ according to where you are based in the UK.
