A playgroup provides sessional daycare for children aged five and under, usually for between two and four hours a day. Playgroups, also known as playschools and pre-schools in England, prepare pre-school children for their first or primary school by enabling them to integrate with peers, begin learning the basics of numbers and letters and develop social skills. Playgroups can provide morning or afternoon sessions, or both. Where both are offered, there must be a break between sessions when no children are in your care. Playgroups can accommodate up to 25 children of mixed ages in any session, but the actual number depends on the size of the premises and the number of staff on duty.
Legislation covering playgroups and the requirements relating to registration, training, the age of children you can care for, and the professional associations you can join, differ between countries in the UK.
