Design is a difficult term to define because it covers so much. Perhaps the two most widely used terms are product design (designing form and function) and graphic design (preparing a decorative work). For the purposes of protection, design is all about appearance. If you are engaged in design, you are creating intellectual property (IP) and you will want to protect it as much as you are able. The law in the UK allows you to protect designs from being copied and used without your permission for up to 25 years.
This factsheet introduces the ways in which you can protect your designs legally and outlines the procedures involved. It includes useful hints and tips as well as sources of further information.
